Are you waking up in the middle of the night to the sound of scratching, chirping or even general movement noises in your roof that you don’t think should be there? It’s likely you’ve got a few unwanted guests who have set up a cozy living space in your roof cavity.

Aside from being a general, but major annoyance, this can pose a great risk to the value of your home and the health of your family.

There are many different critters that can set up shop in your roof, from birds, to possums, insects and mice. It’s a horrible thought, having a family of god know what in your roof, but it’s an issue that can be easily taken care of with the right advice and help.

What to listen or look for when there’s noises in your roof:

    Chirping:

This is easy to listen for, and obviously means you have birds nesting in your roof. You may also spot an external hole in your roof, which the birds are using as an entry and exit point, or you may not notice this at all! Birds only need a very small gap to be able to find their way in.

    Scratching:

You may hear the faint pitter patter of tiny little claws, or scratching above your heads as you lay awake at night wandering what on earth is having a party in your ceiling! It’s likely the scratching is coming from a four-legged critter with claws, although this too could be a bird. Mice also do not need very big spaces to get around your home, in face they can fit in the tightest of gaps.

    Frequent visitors:

While you may not hear anything, you may notice birds frequently flying on to your rooftop, or other creatures hanging about in the same area of your backyard. For example, you may notice more bees in your backyard than normal, often around a certain part of your roof. This could indicate they have set up a hive in your ceiling. If you do notice this, try watch the bird/bee/mouse – whatever it is – and see where it ends up. You may be able to spot how they are getting into your home.

    Droppings:

If you notice frequent droppings in the same areas of your house or backyard, this could also be a sign you have unwanted guests. If this is the case, check around the area to see if you can find their entry point into your home.

Pests nesting in your roof can cause serious damage to your home. Mice, rats and possums can all chew through stored items in your roof as well as chewing cables which could start fires. They can also spread diseases, fleas and mites which can be harmful to your family.

So how do you deal with pests in your roof? The obvious answer is to call in professional pest control specialists. However, this will only provide a short-term solution. To eradicate pests for good, you also need to prevent them from entering your home in the first place. The best solution is to call a gutter guard protection specialist, as they can install mesh protectors and spikes to keep your home pest free.
