Gutter guards play a key role in protecting your home from clogged gutters that can result in deterioration and unwanted mess.
The team at Aussie Gutter Protection can supply and install a professional gutter guard solution, however you may be considering installing gutter guard yourself. There are a range of DIY options available, each come with their own pros and cons. Take a look at our summary below and of course contact us for more information or advice on a solution for your home.
You’re likely to find 4 types of gutter guard at your local Bunnings or hardware store. They come in a range of lengths, colours and styles to suit your roof:
Plastic gutter guard is your cheapest option and is easy to install. It works well, however it lacks durability and effectiveness over long periods of time. Australia’s harsh weather conditions can cause plastic mesh to warp, deteriorate and buckle in the sun. In addition, seeds can easily pass through mesh into gutters, germinating and then growing back through the mesh.
This type of mesh is better suited to fire prone areas, has a higher level of durability and lasts longer than plastic. However the metal is also prone to warp, deteriorate and buckle in the sun. Seed germination is also regular.
The powder coated option comes in 2 styles, square and ridged.
The square option is designed for roof tiles whilst the ridge option is designed for corrugated roofing. This material has greater durability however it is more difficult to install.
The hedgehog or bottle brush filter is the easiest of the 4 to install. After cutting it to size, you simply slide the gutter guard into the gutter. The overall protection of this system is questionable. Leaves are prone to getting stuck in bottle brush guard (as opposed to on it), which leads to deterioration and compost that forms in the bottom of gutter.
Each of the 4 DIY gutter guard options listed above have their pros and cons however for durability and effectiveness, the power coated option stands out. It is however the most difficult to install. If you are prepared to install the gutter guard yourself, make sure you check the quality of the product you are purchasing. Not all powder coated gutter guards are created equal. At Aussie Gutter Protection, we only use high quality Tapex gutter guards that are proudly made in Australia. They come with a 10-15 year warranty and are renowned for quality, durability and effectiveness.
